What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a stilbenoid, a type of natural compound known as polyphenols which are produced by plants as a response to injury, attack of pathogens such as fungi or bacteria and UV radiation damage. (Reference) Polyphenols are derived from plants in which the highest concentration is found in the skin of grapes (hence why it is called the red-wine molecule), blueberries and a Japanese plant known as knotweed and a few other plant species. What are the Benefits of Resveratrol?

The French Paradox

Resveratrol has long been thought to be the main contributor to the phenomena known as the ‘French Paradox’. The ‘French Paradox’ refers to the comparably low incidence of heart disease occurring in the French population despite a diet that is high in saturated fats, prevalence of high blood pressure and smoking compared to other populations. This has caused people to believe that the high levels of antioxidants (Resveratrol being one of them) consumed from drinking red wine may provide protection against various diseases.
